HP OMEN 15 Review

Last year, HP introduced the new OMEN X family for those who want to experience high-end gaming . This family included the OMEN X, the desktop gaming monster, as well as the OMEN 17 laptop and the OMEN X curved monitor. Of course, with the passage of time, the OMEN family has expanded outside of the X series, and has been introduced to users with many models. We are still using the desktop platform OMEN X as our test system. This time, HP OMEN 15 was the guest of our test center with its renewed 2017 model. Let’s see what it offers us?

Design

HP OMEN 15 has been renewed with both interior and exterior design. The OMEN 15, which draws attention with its case structure that has been completely overhauled on the outer surface, is a model that has been upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q design on the inner surface . Thus, the laptop, which has a thinner appearance, looks very aggressive and striking with its outer cover. Although the material used is roughly plastic, the aluminum and carbon fiber touches and the harmony of black and red colors make you satisfied with the design.

At only 2.48 cm thick and 2.62 kilograms, the HP OMEN 15 is an extremely thin and light laptop among gaming laptops. The adapter is relatively small but not very light. So the laptop is not as light and thin as ultraportable laptops, of course, but if we consider it in this category, we can say that it will be easy to carry.

The keyboard of the OMEN 15 also follows the overall design. The keys are reinforced in red and the WASD zone is also separated. The keyboard is not mechanical; If you want a laptop with a mechanical keypad, you have to go up in price.

The touchpad is very comfortable and useful. Both buttons are sensitive. Of course, you will not use a touchpad for gaming, but the touchpad is very suitable for general computer use.

There is a great variety of connections between the laptop. There are 3 USB 3.1 ports, as well as Thunderbolt 3, card reader, full-size HDMI, mini Display Port. Among the wireless connections, we see 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2.

Finally, let’s also say that you can easily open the subsection and change the SSD, RAM or hard disk from here in order to upgrade the OMEN 15.

Technical staff

The HP OMEN 15 comes with a 15.6 inch screen. The model we have has 4K resolution and uses an IPS anti-glare WLED backlit panel. Thus, the screen avoiding reflections, on the other hand, meets the 4K needs of the players with its high resolution amount. Of course, at the level that the GTX 1060 can provide. As you can imagine, the OMEN 15 is not ideal for 4K gaming; but we can say that it is quite satisfactory for 1080p; We will talk about this in our test results.

The OMEN 15 has an Intel Core i7-7700U as a processor . This processor, which has a base frequency of 2.8 GHz, has 4 cores and 8 threads. The processor, which can reach up to 3.8 GHz at a ceiling frequency, is based on 14nm architecture and has a thermal power consumption of 45W.

In addition to DDR4 RAMs running at 2400 MHz with a capacity of 16 GB , the laptop also has a 512 GB PCIe NWMe M.2 SSD and a 1 TB 7200 rpm hard disk. Thus, the laptop offers us both performance and capacity.

As for the graphics, as we said at the beginning , we see that it comes with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 . You can easily play the games of the period on the computer with 6GB capacity GDDR5 RAM. On the other hand, GTX 1060 is a suitable choice for VR; So if you are thinking of diving into the VR worlds, the OMEN 15 will be the laptop you are looking for.

Performance

During our time with OMEN 15, we have had very good results. We can say in advance that you will also be very pleased with the 1080p game performance. However, until we get there, let’s share the benchmark software results we received first:

PCMark 7 – 6727 points
PCMark 8 – 6436 points
3Dmark Sky Diver – 20659 points
ATTO – 1.7 GB / s read / 704 MB / s write

Yes, now that we have passed this part, we have come to where we waited. Let’s see what performance we got with the HP OMEN 15 in high-end graphics values in popular games …

You can see the game tests and results of the HP OMEN 15 by watching the video above.

Let’s also evaluate the OMEN 15’s heat and battery performance. Obviously the OMEN 15 is a model that warms up at the point of gaming performance. I have to say that it is not very cool with its temperature reaching 71 degrees when we operate it at full load ; At this point, you also listen to the fan noise. Fortunately, since most of the players play games with headphones, we can say that this sound will not be of much interest to them.

When it comes to battery performance, we can say that it gets its share like every gaming computer. Especially if you loop a Full HD video with battery saving settings turned off, you will see the battery run out in about 2 hours and 30 minutes . It’s not that different in game performance, either. Oh, if you are going to use it as a normal laptop, it is possible to get performances of up to 11 hours with lower screen resolution and brightness ratios, as HP says . However, since this is a gaming computer, it is obvious that you will not use it that way.

Summing up

As a result, the HP OMEN 15 manages to be a successful laptop for its category. OMEN 15, whose main subject is the game, easily meets this. It also makes a strong impression with its design. The laptop, which uses its technical components to the fullest, can easily find a place in the shopping list of those looking for a good gaming laptop in this category. However, in order not to buy a wrong model, let us state that the model we have is the CE004nt model of the OMEN 15. The price is set at 8499 TL .

Who Should Buy

Those who want to get a good gaming performance in 1080p on the laptop platform, as well as those who want to open the VR door, can easily choose the OMEN 15.
